1. Eat Right and Exercise Regularly

Your food choices matter a lot when you have diabetes. Keep eating something every two and a half to three hours and keep a gap of not more than 4-5 hours between the two main meals. By eating regular meals and snacks, your blood sugar level remains under control. Include low glycemic index (GI) foods, such as whole wheat, brown rice, oats, etc., in each of your meals. Avoid white bread, noodles, white rice, etc., as they can raise blood sugar levels.

It is equally important to do regular physical exercise to maintain normal blood sugar levels. But check your blood sugar level before and after exercise and avoid exercising if your blood sugar level is too high or too low.

2. Control Your Cholesterol Level

Diabetes lowers "good" cholesterol levels and increases triglyceride and "bad" cholesterol levels. This increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. High cholesterol can also lead to complications of diabetes, known as diabetic dyslipidemia. This can result in clogged arteries and lead to coronary complications. Stay away from food items like fast food, burger, pizza, fried snacks etc. These diets increase your LDL cholesterol.

3. Check Your Blood Sugar Levels Regularly

For a diabetic patient, it is the level of blood sugar that indicates whether he has a high level of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or a low level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Both are extremely dangerous. The best way to check your blood sugar level at regular intervals is to have a glucometer on hand. Get the HbA1c checked twice a year. The HbA1c (hemoglobin AIC) is a simple blood test that measures how well your diabetes is managed over time. Its purpose is to measure your average blood sugar level and see if it has remained within the required range. It is important to have this test twice a year or once every three months, depending on how well your diabetes is controlled.

4. Keep taking your medicines regularly
