Temple of Bijli Mahadev
In the Himachal Pradesh district of Kullu, close to the Kashwari hamlet, sits the Bijli Mahadev Temple. This shrine is said to have been in the picturesque Himachal highlands since antiquity. The meeting point of the Beas and Parvati rivers is also close to this temple. This temple has a fascinating history and set of beliefs.
A legend Pertaining to the Bijli Mahadev Temple
This temple is situated on a hill in the Kullu area that is said to have been formed from the body of a demon called Kulant. Kulant inspired the name Kullu. The folklore states that a demon by the name of Kulant used to reside on Earth. Kulant was a formidable force. He wanted to use his power to halt the Vyas River’s flow and submerge the whole valley under water. In order to achieve his goal, Kulant assumed the shape of a python and began attempting to halt the water’s flow. He desired for all living things to perish in water. Lord Shiva felt enraged with Kulant after learning about his home.
Kulant was slain by Shiv Ji
Kulant remained in his hut despite Bholenath’s attempts to persuade him. Lord Shiva tried to get Kulant to accept, but he refused, so Shiv Ji murdered him by burning his tail. The temple of Bijli Mahadev is located atop a mountain that is said to have been created from the dead corpse of the giant Kulant.
Indra received instructions from Lord Shiva
Once Kulant was vanquished, Lord Shiva arrived at Indra. Every twelve years, Shiv Ji commanded Indra to use lightning to attack the mountain formed from Kulant’s corpse. However, Lord Shiva chose to endure the lightning because he did not want his followers to suffer from it. Shiv Ji materialized on the mountain fashioned from Kulant’s flesh as Shivling. This Shivling is said to still experience lightning strikes once every twelve years. This Shivling breaks; let’s be honest.
Shivling unites in this manner after a lightning strike
The Shivling breaks every twelve years when lightning hits. After then, the temple’s priests gather these fragments, combine them, and form a paste out of butter, salt, and sattu. After a few days, this Shivling miraculously begins to revert to its previous shape. Everyone is taken aback by this miracle.
When to go to the temple of Bijli Mahadev
Every year, devotees go to see Bijli Mahadev. In this temple, however, the months of April through June and September through November are said to be the best times for darshan. Devotees are unable to get here during the winter months because of the snowfall. When a devotee visits this temple with genuine devotion, Bholenath grants all of their desires.
