Dakshineswar Temple: Dedicated to Maa Kali, the Dakshineswar Temple is a well-known Hindu temple situated in Kolkata, West Bengal. The architecture of this temple is Navaratna. The nine shikharas (domes) in this temple add to its splendor. In this instance, Maa Kali’s idol is seen standing above Lord Shiva, reflecting his “Dakshin Kali” form.

The complex has twelve Shiva temples devoted to Lord Shiva in addition to the main Kali temple. The shape of these temples is semi-circular. There is also a large Radha-Krishna temple here that was constructed in the “Nava-Navadvipa” style. Dakshineswar Temple is unique in that it also worships a fractured idol of Lord Krishna, which is rather distinct from ordinary Hindu customs that do not often worship fragmented idols. Let’s find out why, however.

The shattered idol is worshiped for this reason

It is stated that after the temple was completed, on the next Janmashtami, the idol fell to the ground and its leg shattered while Lord Krishna was being carried to his chamber following his meal service at the Radha-Govind temple. Everyone began to believe that Shri Krishna was upset with them and began to label this incident unlucky. They were unable to comprehend how to handle the idol.

Pandit ji explained why

A Brahmin proposed speaking with Ramakrishna Paramhansa regarding the decision made at the Brahmin meeting to submerge the idol in water and replace it with a new one. Dakshineswar Temple and Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa have a close relationship. When questioned about it, he chose to keep worshiping this shattered idol since he believed it to be a representation of God’s presence. He placed more value on the idol’s inherent divinity than on its outward appearance.

Everyone approved with Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa’s idea

He believed that devotion to God is based on emotion rather than the idol’s wholeness or breaking. He asserts that the wholeness or fracture of the idol is irrelevant if the devotee has God in their heart. He clarified for the Brahmins whether they should leave a parent injured or a family member incapacitated and bring in a new member. We serve them instead. After deciding that this idol of Shri Krishna will be worshiped at the temple, everyone agreed with Paramhansa’s idea. The same shattered idol has been adored ever since.
