On the day of Mohini Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu assumed the shape of Mohini in order to settle a disagreement between the gods and demons over drinking Amrit at the Samudra Manthan, according to the mythical tale. The demons and gods were forced to sit apart by Lord Vishnu. However, the demons drank the Amrit while dishonestly sitting in the gods’ queue.

Rahu was seen doing this by the Sun and the Moon, who were seated in the line of the gods. After they told Lord Vishnu about it, he used his Sudarshan Chakra to remove Rahu’s head from his body. Rahu, however, did not die since he had consumed Amrit; as a result, the portion of his head became known as Rahu, and the part of his body as Ketu. Rahu and Ketu see the Sun and Moon as their adversaries as a result. A lunar eclipse happens when Rahu swallows the moon on Purnima, while a solar eclipse happens when it swallows the sun on Amavasya.

Birth of Rahu and Ketu

Rahu and Ketu were born at Ujjain, according to the Skanda Purana’s Avanti Khand. Ujjain is the birthplace of these two shadow planets, which cause the sun and moon to eclipse. The Avanti Khand tale states that the Mahakal forest is where the nectar from the ocean’s churning was distributed. Here, Lord Vishnu assumed the shape of Mohini and forced the gods to consume nectar. A demon drank the nectar while posing as the gods at this period. Then his head and body were separated by Lord Vishnu. He was designated as Rahu and Ketu since both of his bodily parts stayed alive as a result of consuming nectar.

In astrology, Rahu and Ketu are referred to as shadow planets. The same devil gave birth to both of these worlds. The demon’s body is known as Ketu, while its head is known as Rahu. They are regarded as mystical planets by certain astrologers. Rahu and Ketu may cause significant disruptions in a person’s life if they are positioned incorrectly in their horoscope. They are so powerful that they can cause the sun and moon to eclipse.

The actual account of Rahu-Ketu’s existence:

In the line of demons was another demon, Swarbhanu. He became aware that Mohini’s shape was being used to trick the demons. As soon as he obtained the nectar to drink, the Sun and Moon Gods recognized him and told Lord Vishnu, who had assumed the shape of Mohini, that he had assumed the form of a deity and had come to sit with them in secret. Lord Vishnu used his chakra to remove Swarbhanu’s head from his body before he could consume the nectar. His head became eternal since the honey had been consumed by his tongue.

According to this tale, Brahma ji connected the snake’s head to its body, which was named Rahu, and his torso to the snake’s head, which was named Ketu. Mythologically speaking, Rahu turned against the sun and moon gods once they revealed Swarbhanu.
