Lord Jagannath formerly had a highly elite following. Madhav Das was his name. Madhav Das used to devote his whole life to serving Lord Jagannath after his wife died. He seems to have devoted his whole life to serving Lord Jagannath. After serving, he would sleep in his hut close to Lord Jagannath’s shrine and eat whatever he had.

Even though years went by, Madhav Das never missed a day of serving the Lord. One day is a huge deal; he didn’t even miss a second of serving the Lord. Madhav Das began to become sick as he got older. “Take rest now; you have grown old and are also ill,” they told him. However, Madhav Das ignored everyone and continued to serve his Lord.

Madhav’s servant

There was a period when Madhav Das was really sick. “See a doctor,” they told him. Take your medication. However, Madhav Das used to tell everyone, “Why should anybody be concerned about the person who has Jagannath’s hand on his forehead? There is God! He’ll put everything right.” This is what he used to say, and he never stopped working for his Lord. He became unwell and one day passed out in his cabin.

Then came Lord Jagannath. Under the pretense of being a regular person, he lifted up Madhavdas and placed him on the cot. Then, being close to him, he began to serve Madhavdas like a mother would a newborn child. He used to apply a bandage to his forehead to lower his temperature. He used to administer decoction to him. Madhavdas was now quite frail. His capacity for thought and comprehension had also significantly diminished.

The joy that Vaikuntha feels

Mythology states that once Lord Sri Madhavdas began to gradually recuperate, he eventually came to realize the Lord. Madhavdas began to weep aloud and folded his hands in front of the Lord after realizing who he was. He cried and shouted, “What are you doing, Prabhu? I am your follower. I serve you. Prabhu, why are you serving me? After wiping away his devotee’s tears, Lord Sri Hari gave him a heartfelt hug. After being engulfed in the Lord’s heart, what desire and hope are left? During his lifetime, Madhavdas was savoring the delights of Vaikuntha on this planet. The Lord stroked his back to calm him.

Weeping, Madhavdas addressed Shri Hari, saying, “O Lord! Oh, Anand! O Parmatma! The three planets are under your rule! You are the Lord of the whole universe, Narayana! Your desire could have instantly healed my illness, so why didn’t you serve me instead of making me fully well? With a grin, the Lord addressed Madhavdas, saying, “Oh dear! One must bear the repercussions of their conduct. Destiny is the circle of karma. Later on, you will still have to endure this anguish, even if I relieve it now. Every action taken in the world has a certain karmic outcome as well. This is how the universe works.

Lord Jagannath, the one who loves devotees

“I have served you according to your deeds,” the Lord then declares. Your assistance to me has been invaluable. God is also hankering for his devotee’s affection. This is the emotion that God values the most. If I can serve you with your love, then I can serve you with my love when you need it. Madhavdas, my dearest! You will undoubtedly reap the rewards of your labors. However, I am so touched by your dedication that I will now bear the rest of your suffering. I’ll take away your pain right now. The final fifteen days of your fever! I’ll take care of it and provide you with a healthy physique.

Why is Lord Jagannath still sick?
