Brahma Temple: Brahma Temple Pushkar is one of the relatively few temples in Rajasthan dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator of the Hindu trinity, and is also the only temple according to scriptures. It is quite close to the Pushkar Lake, where bathing on the full moon or Kartik Purnima in October or November leads to salvation.
The Hindu trinity consists of Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Mahesh the destroyer, often referred to as Shiva. Many believe that Pushkar is the only place in India to have a Brahma temple, which was built as a result of the curse of Savitri (or Saraswati). It is still one of the most famous temples dedicated to Brahma, even if it is no longer the only temple.
The Past of Brahma Temple
The Brahma Temple in India is the subject of many myths and stories, most of which describe its construction. According to one of the main mythologies, Brahma had a craving for self-praise after creating the universe, which manifested in the form of a yajna. After wandering around in search of that ideal spot, he arrived at Pushkar, a beautiful lake surrounded by emeralds. Brahma’s wife Savitri was upset that another man’s religious ritual was taking place in Pushkar. She became angry and cursed Pushkar, saying that no woman would ever be allowed to enter the city again.
However, Brahma did not let the curse come in the way of the sacred fire ritual, and as a result, the place was named “Pushkar,” which translates to “lotus.” The Brahma temple is one of the few places where women are barred for the same awful reason. The Brahma temple in India was likely built in the Middle Ages, but the exact year is unknown. The temple also resembles Rajputana temples, sharing the same architectural style with exquisite pillars, prashasti domes, and beautiful mounds. The appearance of the temple has not changed despite several additions and modifications over the years.
Importance of Brahma Temple
One of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites is the Brahma Temple. People from all over India come to pray at the temple, as it is a site of the highest importance. It is said that this temple is very dynamic and all the wishes of a person are fulfilled after coming here, leaving him satisfied. The daily puja (series of prayers) is one of the most important rituals at the Brahma Temple in India. Apart from performing the puja, the temple priests offer a variety of items, such as fruits and flowers, to the designated deity. Anyone can participate in the puja, including the devotees who pray.
Apart from this, there are many Hindu deities enshrined at the Brahma Temple. Mainly, the temple is considered to be the sister temple of the Savitri Temple, which is also dedicated to Brahma’s wife. People believe that visiting both temples can lead to a more peaceful life.
Best Time to Visit Brahma Temple in Pushkar
Usually, October to March is the ideal time to visit Brahma Temple in Rajasthan (Pushkar), especially around Kartik Purnima. Please keep in mind that Pushkar is a little busier than usual in November due to Kartik Purnima and the famous camel festival.
This place is especially famous during Shraadh. On the second day of Shraadh, we visited the temple, and my mother told me that I am lucky to be there at such an auspicious time. For no apparent reason, this made me happy.
How to Reach Pushkar Brahma Temple
- By Air: Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is the nearest airport despite there not being any airport in Pushkar. From Jaipur Airport, you can go to Pushkar via bus and cabs.
- By Road: Pushkar can be reached from Jaipur and Ajmer via National Highways 48 and 58. For those planning a trip, there is no direct bus from Chandigarh to Pushkar. We then took an overnight bus to Ajmer and from there it took us forty minutes to reach Pushkar.
- By Train: Ajmer, which is the nearest major railway station, is a 30 to 40 minute drive from Pushkar.
