Nishkalank Mahadev Temple: Located on the Koliyak coast near Bhavnagar in Gujarat, the Nishkalank Mahadev Temple is a center of faith that defies human understanding and scientific explanation. It is considered one of the five sacred hidden pilgrimage sites described in Indian culture, mentioned in the scriptures. It is believed that only three of the five hidden pilgrimage sites have been revealed so far, including Rupeshwar Mahadev, Stambheshwar Mahadev, and Nishkalank Mahadev. The remaining two pilgrimage sites are still shrouded in mystery and have not yet been revealed to the world.
Five Shivlings Submerged in the Sea Waves
The most astonishing feature of this temple is its geographical location and the tidal cycle. For approximately 14 hours out of every 24, the entire ancient underwater temple is completely submerged beneath the waves of the Arabian Sea. When the massive waves pass over the five Shivlings located in the middle of the sea, only the tall flag of the temple is visible. Devotees can only visit these Shivlings by walking into the sea during low tide, which seems nothing short of a miracle.
The Mahabharata Era and the Pandavas’ Atonement
The history of Nishkalank Mahadev is directly linked to the epic battle of the Mahabharata. After the war ended, when the Pandavas were overwhelmed with grief over the killing of their own relatives, they sought a way to atone for their sins. Under the guidance of Lord Krishna, they reached the Koliyak coast in Gujarat. Here, they performed rigorous penance to Lord Shiva, who, pleased with their devotion, appeared before the five brothers in the form of five separate Shivlings. This is why five Shivlings and idols of Nandi Maharaj are installed here.
Salvation-Granting Ashes and Unbroken Traditions
There is a deep-seated belief among devotees that this place not only destroys sins but also grants peace to the soul. Devotees who come here (Moksha Spiritual Beliefs) touch the ashes of their loved ones’ pyres to the Shiva Lingam and then immerse them in the water, believing that this will grant salvation to their ancestors. The tradition of offering sacred ash, milk, curd, and coconut to Lord Shiva during worship has been followed for centuries. Despite being surrounded by the sea, the simplicity of this place offers devotees a transcendental experience of peace.
The Historical Grandeur of the Bhadravi Fair
On the occasion of the new moon in the month of Bhadrapada, a grand event takes place here, known as the Bhadravi Fair. This fair begins with the hoisting of a new religious flag at the temple. Amazingly, this flag remains intact throughout the year, despite the fierce waves and strong winds of the sea. On the day of the new moon, millions of devotees gather here, waiting for the tide to recede so that they can bow their heads at the feet of Lord Shiva.

According to ancient legends, this sacred place of Nishkalank Mahadev remained hidden in the depths of the sea for many centuries. Over time, this mysterious temple was revealed, and today it remains a subject of curiosity and reverence for Shiva devotees worldwide. Even today, devotees come here seeking purification of their souls and blessings for a new beginning in life.
