Sri Katyayani Peeth Temple: One of the 51 important Shakti Peethas in Hinduism is the Katyayani Shakti Peeth in Vrindavan. We built the main temple at this sacred place in 1923. The temple is situated at the site where a lock of hair belonging to Goddess Sati fell after a tragic incident. To defeat the demon Mahishasura, Goddess Parvati became the terrifying form of Goddess Katyayani. She has the reputation of being strong and protective. On the sixth day of Navratri, they worship Goddess Katyayani.
It is believed that young, unmarried women who worship Goddess Katyayani are blessed. Girls who worship at the temple get favorable husbands. In Vrindavan, gopis used to take sand from the banks of the Yamuna River to make the idol of Goddess Katyayani. They used to adore this idol and implore Lord Krishna to marry them. Katyayani-vrata is the name of this activity, which is still remembered by followers.
Background of Shakti Peethas
The sacred sites known as Shakti Peethas are associated with the story of Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati. Sati was the wife of Lord Shiva and daughter of King Daksha. Shiva was not invited to King Daksha’s grand yagna, as he disliked him. Sati went to the yagna and jumped into the flames after feeling humiliated in her grief and anger.
Shiva was saddened and frustrated at Sati’s demise. The “Tandava” is a destructive dance he performed after lifting her burning corpse. Lord Vishnu cut Sati’s corpse into pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra to appease Shiva and put an end to the mayhem. These pieces, which eventually came to be known as Shakti Peethas, fell in various places. Sati’s hair is said to have fallen in Vrindavan, where Katyayani Shakti Peeth is currently located.
Background of Katyayani Devi Temple, Vrindavan
Swami Keshavanandji, originally known as Panchakodi Banerjee, was born on December 25, 1830, in Shivanipur village in the Howrah district of West Bengal. Following the teachings of his guru, Sri Lahiri Mahasaya, he devoted 33 years of his life to exploring the Himalayan hills. While Swami Keshavanandji was in the Himalayas, the Almighty Mother gave him a holy vision, asking him to visit Vrindavan.
His task was to locate the Shakti Peethas mentioned in the Puranas. There, he was to build a temple dedicated to Goddess Katyayani and restore her devotion to benefit and uplift people in the contemporary world. Swami Keshavanandji arrived in Vrindavan after receiving divine education. He began living in a small cottage in Radha Bagh on the banks of the Yamuna River. He quickly located the Shakti Peethas, a revered place of devotion to the Goddess. He eventually acquired the property needed to build the temple, which was completed in 1923.
Katyayani Peeth: Darshan and Aarti Timings
After the morning darshan, Katyayani Shakti Peeth opens at 7 am and closes at 11 am. The Katyayani Peeth temple closes at 8:00 pm. The darshan timings are the same in summer and winter at this temple.
