Story of Gayatri Mata: Gayatri Mata is revered in Sanatan culture as the Mother of Vedas, as it is believed that all four Vedas originated from her. Therefore, her main mantra is considered the essence of all the Vedas. It is believed that the spiritual merit gained from studying all four Vedas can be achieved through deep contemplation of the Gayatri Mantra. In Indian spirituality, Gayatri is called the Mother of Culture (divine wisdom), inspiring human life towards truth, knowledge, and light.
The Form and Significance of Gayatri Mata
Gyaneshwari Devi (Gayatri Mata) is considered the Adishakti of the Vedas, Shastras, and all Shrutis. Because of the origin of the Vedas, she is called the Mother of Vedas, and because she is worshipped by the Trinity, she is also addressed as the Mother of Gods. As the presiding deity (goddess) of knowledge, energy, and consciousness, she is considered the Ganga of Knowledge. She is also described as the consort of Brahma and is said to be a combined incarnation of Parvati, Saraswati, and Lakshmi.
The Story of Gayatri’s Marriage
According to one incident, when Brahma was departing for a special yajna (sacred ritual), a consort was required to accompany him. Savitri was not present as his companion at that time, so he married Gyaneshwari Devi, who was present there, to attain the full fruition of the yajna. This incident demonstrates the importance of the accompaniment of sacred energy in every auspicious act of yajna, dharma, and karma.
The Incarnation of Gayatri Mata
In the early days of creation, the Gyaneshwari Devi mantra appeared to Brahma in the form of divine light. By Gyaneshwari Devi’s grace, he was able to recite the four Vedas from his four mouths. In the ancient heritage, this knowledge was limited to the gods, but through rigorous penance, Vishwamitra brought it to the human race on Earth. Just as Bhagiratha brought Ganga to earth, Vishwamitra made the mantra of the goddess Gyaneshwari accessible to all.
The Festival of Gayatri Jayanti
Different traditions prevail in different regions regarding the date of Gyaneshwari Jayanti. In many places, it is celebrated on Ganga Dussehra, while in others, it is celebrated on the Ekadashi of the month of Jyeshtha. Additionally, Shravan Purnima is also recognized as Gyaneshwari Devi Jayanti in many regions. This festival is not merely a celebration, but a means of remembering the knowledge and energy of the goddess of the Vedas.
The Glory and Spiritual Influence of Gayatri Mata
The Atharva Veda describes the goddess of the Vedas as the presiding power that bestows longevity, life, energy, prosperity, and radiance. Maharishi Vyas has said that just as ghee exists in milk and honey exists in flowers, similarly, the essence of all the Vedas is contained in Gyaneshwari Devi. Chanting the name of Gyaneshwari Devi purifies the soul just as the Ganges washes away the sins of the body. According to Vishwamitra, the Tripadi Gyaneshwari Devi mantra, uttered by Brahma, is the best of all mantras, freeing one from sins and leading to spiritual awakening.
