Mythological story of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga

It is told in the Puranas that Lord Shiva’s two sons Shri Ganesh and Shri Swami Kartikeya, once quarreled over marriage. Both of them had an argument over who would get married first. When they could not agree, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati declared that the person who would return first from their earthly cycle would get married.

As soon as Kartikeya heard his parents, he sat on his peacock and started going across the earth. However, Ganesha found this duty very challenging. How could he beat his brother in this contest when his body was huge and his vehicle was a mouse? Ganesha’s body was not as sharp as his mind. He found out a way to go around the world and after worshipping his parents, he went around the earth seven times. When Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati saw how much Ganesha loved his parents, they got emotional and declared him the winner of the contest.

On returning after the world tour, Kartikeya found out that Ganesha had two sons Kshema and Labh, and two daughters Siddhi and Buddhi. When Kartikeya saw this, he became angry and left the family and went to the Krounch mountain. When his mother went to pacify her angry son, Lord Shiva appeared from behind and appeared in the form of a Jyotirlinga. That day it became famous as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga. The first explanation behind the name of this Jyotirlinga, Mallikarjuna, is that it was worshipped with Mallika flowers.
