Traditional Rituals Followed During the Thursday Fast

The Thursday fast should be observed according to traditional religious practices. Devotees begin the day early in the morning by taking a bath and offering prayers to Lord Brihaspati. Yellow items are considered auspicious for the ritual. During the worship, devotees offer yellow flowers, turmeric, yellow rice, chickpea lentils, raisins, and yellow sweets.

Another important aspect of the ritual is the worship of the banana tree, which holds symbolic significance in this fast. While performing the prayers and listening to the fasting story, devotees are encouraged to maintain purity in thoughts, actions, and speech. They pray sincerely to Lord Brihaspati for the fulfillment of their wishes and for the well-being of their family.

A Traditional Story Connected to the Thursday Fast

Ancient folklore linked to the Thursday fast speaks of a generous and powerful king who ruled his kingdom with kindness. The king regularly observed the Thursday fast and distributed charity to the poor and needy. However, his queen strongly disliked these acts of charity. She neither kept the fast nor approved of giving away wealth.

One day, while the king had gone to the forest for hunting, the queen remained at the palace with her maid. At that moment, Lord Brihaspati arrived at the palace disguised as a wandering saint and asked the queen for alms. Instead of offering help, the queen expressed frustration about the constant donations and asked the saint to suggest a way for all her wealth to disappear so she could live without the burden of charity.

The saint advised her that wealth should be used for noble causes such as helping the poor, arranging marriages for underprivileged girls, and building schools and gardens for the welfare of society. However, the queen was not pleased with this advice and insisted she did not want wealth that required her to give charity.

Consequences of Ignoring Wisdom

Seeing her stubbornness, the saint eventually told the queen that if she truly wanted to lose her wealth, she should follow certain actions every Thursday that went against sacred traditions. The queen followed these instructions without hesitation. Within only a few weeks, the palace lost all its riches, and the royal family soon faced extreme hardship.

Eventually, the king left for another land in search of work because he could no longer maintain his status in his own kingdom. He survived by cutting wood in the forest and selling it in the marketplace. Meanwhile, the queen and her maid struggled with poverty and hunger.

After several days without food, the queen asked her maid to visit her wealthy sister in a nearby town and request some help. When the maid reached the sister’s home, she found that the sister was listening to the Thursday fast story and could not interrupt the ritual. The maid returned disappointed and informed the queen.

Later, the sister visited the queen and explained that during the sacred story one must not speak or leave the ritual midway. When she learned about the queen’s difficult situation, she advised her to observe the Thursday fast sincerely.

Devotion Brings Change

Following her sister’s guidance, the queen and her maid began observing the fast properly. They worshipped Lord Vishnu at the base of the banana tree using chickpea lentils and raisins, lit a lamp, listened to the fasting story, and consumed only yellow-colored food.

According to the legend, Lord Brihaspati became pleased with their devotion. In disguise, he appeared and provided them with food. Gradually, their situation improved, and prosperity returned to their household.

Lesson From the Sacred Story

Despite regaining wealth, the queen initially became careless again. Her maid reminded her of the hardships they had endured and encouraged her to use their wealth wisely by helping the needy and supporting good causes. The queen eventually understood the lesson and began spending her resources on charitable and beneficial activities for society.

The story concludes with the message that after listening to the Thursday fast story, devotees should perform an aarti with devotion and distribute the prasad among those present. The tradition emphasizes humility, generosity, and faith.
