How was the temple established?
In mythology, Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga is described. It is said that other sages in the area were envious of Rishi Gautam, the spouse of Goddess Ahalya, who resided atop Brahmagiri Mountain. All of the sages once accused Gautam Rishi of killing cows, and they all informed him that he would have to make up for his transgression. And you must bring the Ganga water here for this. In order to appease Lord Shiva, Gautam Rishi built Shivling on this and began doing penance. And Lord Shiva materialized in front of him, delighted by the penance. Gautam Rishi was instructed to request a boon by Shivji. Gautam Rishi then requested that Ganga Mata be brought to this location. However, Ganga Mata said that she would only visit this location when Lord Shiva was staying here. After hearing what he had to say, Lord Shiva took up residence here as Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. The Ganga River, also known as the Gautami River in this area, began to flow freely from the area around the Trimbakeshwar temple.
