Religion – The story of Lord Venkatesh, widely worshipped as Balaji in the present age, is deeply rooted in ancient traditions and mythological events that continue to shape devotional beliefs across generations.
The origins of this belief can be traced back to the well-known episode of the cosmic ocean churning. According to traditional accounts, when gods and demons churned the ocean, several divine treasures emerged. Among them was Goddess Lakshmi, whose beauty and grace captivated all beings. Many sought her hand in marriage, but she found imperfections in each of them. Eventually, she chose Lord Vishnu, who stood calm and detached, and placed a garland around his neck. Vishnu, in turn, accepted her and gave her a place upon his chest.
A Symbolic Place Beyond the Heart
The placement of Lakshmi on Vishnu’s chest rather than in his heart has long intrigued scholars and devotees. It is believed that Vishnu’s heart represents his duty toward maintaining balance in the universe. To ensure that this responsibility remained undisturbed, Lakshmi was given a revered position on his chest, symbolizing both closeness and respect without interfering with his cosmic role.
Sage Bhrigu’s Test of the Divine
A significant turning point in this narrative came during a grand sacrificial ritual held on Earth for the welfare of all beings. The question arose as to which among the trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, or Shiva—should receive the sacred offering. Sage Bhrigu was chosen to make this decision.
He first approached Brahma and then Shiva but found both unsuitable for reasons not detailed in many accounts. Finally, he reached Vishnu, who was resting. Feeling ignored, Bhrigu reacted impulsively and struck Vishnu’s chest with his foot. In response, Vishnu displayed remarkable humility. Instead of expressing anger, he gently held the sage’s foot and asked if he had been hurt.
This act of compassion deeply moved Bhrigu, who declared Vishnu the most deserving recipient of the ritual’s blessings.
Lakshmi’s Departure and Its Consequences
However, Lakshmi, who witnessed the incident, felt deeply offended. Since Vishnu’s chest was her abode, she saw the act as a grave insult. She was equally upset with Vishnu for not reprimanding the sage. In her anger, she decided to leave Vaikuntha and departed from Vishnu.
Her departure created a void, prompting Vishnu to descend to Earth in search of her. He took the form of Srinivasa, beginning a new chapter in the divine story.
Reunion Through Earthly Incarnation
In time, Lakshmi was reborn on Earth as Padmavati. Fate eventually brought Srinivasa and Padmavati together, leading to their marriage. The union was celebrated by celestial beings, and even Sage Bhrigu returned to seek forgiveness from Lakshmi and offer his blessings to the couple.
Lakshmi accepted his apology, bringing closure to the earlier conflict. The marriage symbolized not only reunion but also the restoration of harmony between divine forces.
The Debt to Kubera and Devotional Belief
One lesser-known yet significant aspect of this story is linked to the grand wedding. To meet the expenses of the ceremony, Vishnu is believed to have borrowed wealth from Kubera, the god of riches. According to tradition, this debt is yet to be fully repaid and will continue until the end of the current age.
This belief holds special importance for devotees visiting Tirupati. Offerings made at the temple are not seen merely as acts of devotion but also as contributions toward settling this divine debt. It is widely believed that Lord Balaji blesses his devotees abundantly and never lets them return empty-handed.
