Hanuman, one of the most revered figures in Hindu tradition, appears in numerous versions of the Ramayana across the world. From his childhood adventures to his presence believed to continue into the present age, countless narratives celebrate his strength, devotion, and wisdom. Known as a protector in the current era, his stories are passed down through generations. Here are five widely known legends that continue to hold significance today.
Blessing of Eternal Presence
After the victory in Lanka, when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya, he expressed gratitude to those who supported him in battle, including Sugriva and Vibhishana. During this time, Hanuman made a unique request. He prayed that his life should continue as long as the story of Rama is remembered on earth.
Moved by his devotion, Rama granted him this boon, assuring that as long as his name and story are spoken, Hanuman’s presence and fame would endure. This belief forms the basis of the popular idea that Hanuman remains active even today, listening wherever the Ramayana is recited.
The Tale of the Sanjeevani Mountain
Hanuman’s association with the life-saving Sanjeevani herb is among his most famous feats. According to tradition, he lifted an entire mountain when he could not identify the exact herb needed to save Lakshmana during the war.
However, another lesser-known version suggests that even in his childhood, he once brought a mountain from the sea upon divine guidance for the benefit of his father.
During the war, as he carried the mountain back, a demon named Kalanemi attempted to obstruct him. Recognizing the deception, Hanuman swiftly defeated him and continued his mission, ultimately saving countless lives.
Connecting Vibhishana with Rama
While searching for Sita in Lanka, Hanuman reached Vibhishana’s residence and noticed symbols of Rama there. This intrigued him and led to a conversation between the two. Through their exchange, Hanuman understood that Vibhishana was righteous despite being Ravana’s brother.
Later, when Vibhishana left Lanka after a disagreement with Ravana and approached Rama’s camp, many doubted his intentions. It was Hanuman who reassured the others and supported Vibhishana’s acceptance. Rama, upholding his principle of protecting those who seek refuge, welcomed him. This moment proved crucial in shaping the course of the war.
The Lost Hanuman Ramayana
Scholarly traditions mention that Hanuman himself composed a version of the Ramayana before the well-known work by sage Valmiki. It is believed that Hanuman inscribed this narrative on rocks using his nails during his time in the Himalayas.
When Valmiki later completed his own Ramayana and came across Hanuman’s version, he felt disheartened, fearing his work would be overshadowed.
Understanding his concern, Hanuman chose humility over recognition. He carried the rock inscriptions and immersed them in the ocean, dedicating his work entirely to Rama. As a result, this version, known as the Hanuman Ramayana, is said to be lost to time.
Hanuman and Arjuna’s Encounter
Another interesting story appears in later texts, describing a meeting between Hanuman and Arjuna. During a visit to a sacred site, Arjuna questioned Hanuman about events from the Ramayana. Their discussion eventually led to Hanuman agreeing to support Arjuna in the future.
This is believed to be the reason why Hanuman is depicted on the flag of Arjuna’s chariot during the Mahabharata war. His presence symbolized strength, protection, and divine assurance in battle.
