Story of Lord Shiva and Bhasmasura: One of the most well-known and significant tales in Indian mythology is the one about Lord Shiva and Bhasmasura. This story describes how Lord Shiva asked Lord Vishnu for assistance in order to preserve his life and how Vishnu ji used his Maya to slay Bhasmasur. In order to spare Bhasmasur’s life, Lord Shiva enlisted the aid of Lord Vishnu, who assumed the shape of Mohini and murdered Bhasmasur. This story illustrates the value of loyalty and triumphing against ego and dishonesty.

How Bhasmasur got the boon

In legend, a demon by the name of Bhasmasur existed. His goals were to become immortal and very strong. He began a rigorous penance of Lord Shiva with this goal. For many years, he practiced strict penance, which led to anarchy in all three realms. Lord Shiva, who was pleased with Bhasmasur’s penance, urged him to request a boon. “O Mahadev!” Bhasmasur prayed for a boon. Give me the ability to reduce anybody whose head I touch to ashes.

Saying ‘Tathastu,’ Lord Shiva, who promptly grants his followers their requests, gave him the gift. Upon receiving the blessing, Bhasmasur’s ego soared to the seventh heaven. He thought, “Why don’t I try this boon on Lord Shiva?” since he had become so conceited. In order to place his palm on Shiva’s head and convert him into ashes, he began to rush after him.

When Lord Shiva discovered Bhasmasur’s duplicity, he was horrified and fled to save his life. Bhasmasur persisted in pursuing him even after he took refuge in a cave.

Mohini, a form of Lord Vishnu

Lord Shiva thought about Lord Vishnu while he was in difficulty. Lord Vishnu showed up there right away and recognized the predicament. Since Bhasmasur had obtained the favor of Lord Shiva himself, he was aware that he could not be destroyed by direct combat. Lord Vishnu then devised a scheme. He assumed the persona of Mohini, a stunningly attractive and endearing lady.

“Who are you running after?” said Mohini as she approached Bhasmasur. Get married to me. Mohini’s attractiveness captivated Bhasmasur, who consented to marry her right away.

This is how Bhasmasura was killed

Bhasmasur was presented with a condition from Mohini: “I will marry you, but first you must dance with me.” You must follow along while I dance. After agreeing to the terms, Bhasmasur and Mohini began dancing. Mohini continued to do intricate and exquisite dancing poses. Mohini maintained a position where she held one hand on her own head while dancing.

With the blessing of Lord Shiva, Bhasmasur put his hand on his head in imitation of Mohini, and his narrative came to an end as he was instantly converted to ashes. Therefore, Bhasmasura was destroyed by Lord Vishnu’s shrewdness and guile rather than by Lord Shiva using physical force. We learn from this tale that ego is doomed and that lying may be required to preserve the truth.
