VaishnoDevi – Sacred Legend Behind the Revered Vaishno Devi Shrine
VaishnoDevi – Devotees across India hold deep faith in Mata Vaishno Devi and continue to visit her sacred shrine seeking blessings and spiritual strength. Hindu scriptures describe that in the present age, devotion, prayers, and the narration of divine legends help people overcome hardships. Over time, different versions of these stories have emerged, but the central message of faith and divine grace remains unchanged.
The Divine Blessing Bestowed Upon a Devoted Worshipper
One of the most widely narrated legends connected with Mata Vaishno Devi revolves around her devoted follower, Pandit Shridhar. It is believed that the goddess protected his honor and revealed her divine powers to the world through a miraculous event. Since then, millions of pilgrims have visited the holy shrine and sought her blessings.
Pandit Shridhar lived in Hansali village near Katra. Although respected for his devotion, he remained saddened by the absence of children in his life. During one Navratri celebration, he invited young girls for a traditional worship ceremony. Among them appeared a mysterious young girl, who was believed to be Mata Vaishno Devi in human form.
The Extraordinary Feast That Astonished Villagers
After the ritual concluded, the young girl instructed Shridhar to invite everyone in the surrounding villages for a grand feast. Trusting her words, he spread the invitation far and wide. While returning, he also invited Guru Gorakhnath, Bhairavnath, and their disciples.
The invitation surprised local residents, who wondered how a simple household could host such a large gathering. On the appointed day, countless villagers assembled. The divine girl began serving food from a seemingly endless vessel, ensuring that every guest received a meal.
When she reached Bhairavnath, he demanded meat and alcohol instead of the vegetarian offerings being served. The girl explained that such food was inappropriate in a Brahmin household. However, Bhairavnath refused to change his demand and persisted stubbornly.
Bhairavnath’s Pursuit and the Journey to Trikuta Hills
According to tradition, Bhairavnath eventually attempted to seize the mysterious girl. Realizing his intentions, she transformed into a spiritual form and moved toward the Trikuta Mountains. Bhairavnath followed her relentlessly.
It is believed that Lord Hanuman accompanied and protected the goddess during this journey. At one point, Hanuman became thirsty. Responding to his request, the goddess released a stream of water by shooting an arrow into the mountainside. This sacred stream later became known as Ban Ganga. Pilgrims continue to regard its waters as holy and spiritually uplifting.
The Sacred Cave and a Period of Meditation
During her journey, Mata Vaishno Devi entered a cave and meditated there for nine months. Bhairavnath continued his pursuit and eventually reached the same area. A holy sage warned him that the girl he was chasing was none other than the supreme divine power. Despite the warning, he refused to stop.
The goddess then created another passage through the cave and emerged from a different exit. This site is now revered as Ardhkuwari, also known as Garbh Joon. Nearby lies Charan Paduka, a sacred spot where devotees believe the goddess briefly turned back during her journey.
The Final Battle and Bhairavnath’s Redemption
Eventually, Mata Vaishno Devi revealed her divine form and instructed Bhairavnath to abandon his pursuit. He ignored the warning. A fierce confrontation followed, with Hanuman defending the goddess. When the conflict escalated, the goddess assumed the powerful form of Mahakali and defeated Bhairavnath.
Legend states that Bhairavnath’s severed head fell on a distant hilltop, where the Bhairavnath Temple now stands. The site where the goddess manifested her divine power became the sacred Bhawan, the principal shrine visited by pilgrims today. Within the cave, devotees worship three holy pindis representing Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati, collectively revered as Mata Vaishno Devi.
The Tradition That Continues Today
After his defeat, Bhairavnath is said to have repented and sought forgiveness. Understanding that his ultimate desire was spiritual liberation, the goddess granted him salvation. She also declared that the pilgrimage to her shrine would remain incomplete unless devotees visited Bhairavnath’s temple afterward.
Another belief associated with the shrine states that Pandit Shridhar later received divine guidance through a vision and discovered the sacred cave. He dedicated his life to worship at the holy site, and his descendants are believed to have continued the tradition for generations.
