Parshuram Temple – Ancient Shrine in Unnao Linked to Sacred Legends
Parshuram Temple – A revered temple located near Nawabganj in Uttar Pradesh continues to attract devotees due to its deep association with ancient Hindu traditions and longstanding local beliefs. According to popular religious accounts, the ashram of Sage Jamadagni, the father of Lord Parshuram, was situated in Bhitarepar village near Nawabganj. It is believed that the sage spent years performing penance at this site, making the area an important place of spiritual significance.
Legend Associated With Sage Jamadagni
Local traditions recount that Sage Jamadagni possessed the divine Kamadhenu cow, known in Hindu scriptures for fulfilling wishes and providing abundance. During that period, a regional king reportedly sought the sacred cow as a donation. However, the sage declined the request. This refusal is said to have angered the king’s sons, who later attacked and killed the sage.
The tragic event became a defining moment in the legend of Lord Parshuram. Historical and religious narratives preserved by local communities suggest that news of his father’s death reached Parshuram while he was away. Upon learning of the incident, he immediately returned to Bhitarepar and resolved to avenge the loss.
Establishment of the Goddess Durga Shrine
According to the temple’s traditional history, Lord Parshuram first installed an idol of Goddess Durga at the site before undertaking his vow. It is believed that he pledged to eliminate the lineage responsible for the killing of Sage Jamadagni. Religious folklore states that he later fulfilled this promise, bringing an end to the ruling family connected to the crime.
Following these events, the place gradually emerged as a center of worship. Devotees began offering prayers at the shrine, and over time the temple gained recognition among believers across the region.

Today, the temple stands in Nawabganj district of Unnao and is easily accessible from the Nawabganj highway. Situated approximately 150 to 200 meters from the main road, the shrine receives a steady flow of visitors throughout the year.
